David Huck has been recruited to lead operational performance at the group's Mersey Port facilities and take responsibility for the 16,000 vessel movements it handles per year.

Huck joins from Hutchison Ports Felixstowe where he was Senior Manager for Container Terminal Operations and a key figure in delivering significant improvements to productivity and customer service during his five years with the company.

Huck said: "I am delighted to join the team at the Port of Liverpool. It is evident from the wide portfolio of customers and the increasing demand for port-centric solutions within the UK, that having that capability to deliver solutions so close to major consumer conurbations and distribution centres represents a largely untapped opportunity for ports.

"Industry within the UK is starting to shift to more centrally-located terminals, largely driven from the retail and processing sectors who today require more value-added logistics and supply chain solutions. The combination of existing facilities, when aligned with the planned deep water container river terminal and the development of port-centric storage and distribution hubs along the 44-mile stretch of the Manchester Ship Canal, is exactly the gap in the marketplace that made the decision to join the group unquestionable."

Huck is the latest appointment in the Port's management team which is led by Managing Director Gary Hodgson.

On the appointment, Hodgson said: "Bringing David into the business will further drive the delivery of bottom line benefits through improvements in operational productivity and customer service. We have significant investment underway, where we are investing and harnessing an array of technical solutions which deliver improved business performance in the most cost-effective way; so this is just one element of our growth strategy.

"This year will see the turnkey delivery of a £1.6m investment in terminal operating systems including the full integration of yard carrier G.P.S. (Global Positioning Systems) and some of the latest container operating platforms within our R.S.C.T. Container Terminal Operation. David's vast experience in terminal operations will ensure we deliver this in a seamless manner.

"We aim to be the most productive container terminal in the UK providing a range of market-driven solutions that our customers require for their growth."

An M.B.A. and B.Sc (Hons) graduate in Industrial Management and Engineering respectively; Huck began his career with a tier one automotive supplier in 1995 and held the positions of Operations Development Manager, General Manager and Operations Director before entering port operations with Hutchison in 2005.

Huck added: "The energy and 'can do' enthusiasm of the entire operations team at the Port of Liverpool is fantastic and harnessing that drive in delivering the group's growth objectives, whilst developing excellent levels of customer service, will be amongst my initial priorities."

Already this year, Peel Ports has delivered a number of successes, including increasing capacity on the barge service provided along the Manchester Ship Canal, adding additional services into the Port of Liverpool's container terminal and integrating the offers of Liverpool and Manchester, creating a 44-mile stretch of water in the heart of the UK.

Together, the Port of Liverpool and Manchester Ship Canal offer a comprehensive range of port facilities, handling more than 40 million tonnes of cargo and 16,000 ship movements a year – making the River Mersey Britain's third busiest estuary.
