Mr King viewed the stretch of the River Mersey which will be transformed into Liverpool's second terminal for its fast growing container trade, during a tour and briefing on Peel's current and planned projects for the North West, amounting to £50 billion worth of investment.

Along with the other members of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee, which meets each month to decide on UK interest rates, the Governor makes several fact finding visits each year to regions of the country.

He was accompanied on his visit to the Port of Liverpool, which handles 34 million tonnes of cargo a year, by the Bank of England's North West agent and deputy agent John Young and Neil Ashbridge, and also had talks with the Chief Executive of Peel Ports, Stephen Baxter and the Group's Finance and Marketing Directors David Green and Frank Robotham.

Said Mr Baxter: "We were grateful for the opportunity to brief Mr King on the dynamic developments taking place at the port and elsewhere in the North West and to pass on our unique view of the regional economy. At the same time, it was valuable to hear what the Governor of the Bank of England had to say."

During his two days in the North West of England Mr King will visit Liverpool, Sefton and Ellesmere Port, talking with a range of Bank contacts and business individuals and groups.

Peel Ports is the UK's second largest ports group with Liverpool, the Manchester Ship Canal and Heysham Port in the North West, Clydeport in Scotland and Medway Ports in the South East of England, plus major container terminals in Dublin, Belfast and Cardiff.
